As stated in the previous article, there is an issue on the EX1 woodland site where the gorse is expanding and at a rate which is detrimental to the land. While gorse has it's benefits, particularly in protecting tree saplings from natural predators, too much of it is bad for the ecosystem. In late 2025, EX1 was presented with an opportunity to sponsor a goat. The goat forms part of a heard which is being used to maintain balance within this complex ecosystem.
The heard of goats arrived in December 2025 and they have been making great headway. The gorse is receding and the goats are proving very effective in maintaining balance within this complex ecosystem. However, the length of time for which the goats are being used by the Woodland Manager will ultimately determine the success of the project. If the goats are removed too quickly, the gorse could reclaim the cleared areas. Too slowly and tree saplings may be at risk. This highlights the need for balance and the delicate management of the project.
Further updates regarding the impact and progress of the goats will be presented on our website over the coming months.
