Over the past 3-years, EX1 has offset 120 Tons of Carbon Dioxide on an annual basis with our Yorkshire based, EX1 woodland. Our Managing Director, Matt Davies, recently visited the woodland for a one-on-one guided tour.
During the visit, Matt learned how trees communicate and support one another through a complex ecosystem. Matt also learned about the various forms of fungus and the vital role they play within these complex ecosystems. Matt was surprised to learn that it is only the external rings of a tree which is living, as he witnessed a completely hollow ancient tree. The visit guide was very informed and had a wealth of knowledge in relation to the habitats which have been, and continue to be, created.
Matt really enjoyed the experience and EX1 has committed to offsetting another 120 Tons of Carbon over the next 12-months. There is some truly excellent work being undertaken by the company which hosts and manages the woodland and EX1 are pleased to continue their on-going support. This includes the plantation of a new forestry in 2018 which is being used to join two (2) ancient woodlands, the removal of deer from the site to protect tree saplings, the plantation of more trees etc. The site itself is unique in that the ancient woodlands are located on a hillside, something which is not typical seen in the UK.
In addition, there is an issue on the woodland site where the gorse is expanding and claiming part of the land. While gorse has it's benefits, particularly in protecting tree saplings from natural predators, too much of it is bad for the ecosystem. As such, EX1 has been presented with an opportunity to sponsor a goat. The goats will be used to naturally control the gorse and to maintain balance within this complex ecosystem. The Managing Director has elected to sponsor a goat and further updates regarding their impact and progress will be presented on our website over the coming months.
